How Long Does Waxing Last?

Waxing is a quick and easy way to remove unwanted hair on the face and body, but many new clients wonder how long they’ll enjoy smooth, hair-free skin between appointments. The truth is that results vary from person to person. However, we can give you a general idea of how long you can expect your wax to last.

Today, we’re discussing the factors that affect hair growth after waxing and offering a few tips to help you make the most of your session.

Benefits of waxing

You’ll find a lot to love about waxing, especially when compared to other popular hair removal methods. Here are a few benefits to look forward to:

Can encourage less hair growth over time

The more you wax, the less you have to wax! After waxing, you may notice your hair grows back thinner and finer. That’s because the technique can destroy some of your hair follicles so they no longer produce new strands.

Long-lasting results compared to shaving

After shaving, you may feel that dreaded prickly stubble popping up within mere hours. But waxing removes hairs at the root, meaning they must regenerate entirely, leaving you with silky-smooth skin for weeks at a time.

While waxing isn’t a permanent solution like laser hair removal, it offers long-lasting results you won’t get from shaving.

Minimizes the risk of ingrown hairs

Shaving slices hairs at the skin, leaving behind thick roots. As these shafts begin to regrow, they can become trapped under the skin and become painful and inflamed.

Although there is some risk of ingrown hairs with waxing, the condition is less common for two reasons. Firstly, waxing exfoliates the skin, making it easier for hairs to break through. Secondly, the finely tapered tips of fresh baby hairs are naturally shaped to come out more easily.

How long do waxing results last?

Generally speaking, you can expect the results of your waxing session to last anywhere from three to six weeks. Here are a few factors that affect your hair growth rate:

Hair growth

Everyone’s hair grows at a different speed. Genetics and hormones can dictate how quickly new strands appear and how long your waxing results may last. Some people simply have faster regrowth than others.

Waxing area

The hair on each area of your body grows at different rates, too. The following list shows how long you can expect results to last for various waxing treatment areas:

  • Facial hair: 2 to 3 weeks

  • Back and chest: 4 to 6 weeks

  • Underarms: 3 to 4 weeks

  • Bikini area and full Brazilian: 4 to 5 weeks

  • Legs: 4 to 6 weeks

Consistency

New waxing clients may be disappointed to see regrowth within a week, but that’s because wax can’t remove hairs that haven’t yet reached their skin’s surface. Once you establish a consistent waxing routine, your hair growth cycles will begin to synchronize, and you’ll enjoy the results for much longer.

What to expect for your first waxing appointment

If you’ve never had a wax before, get ready to fall in love! Here are a few tips to help you care for your skin and get the best results from your first waxing session

Before waxing

If you’re prone to plucking, you’ll need to stop about a month before your waxing appointment. Then, put down the razor about three weeks before your session. Remember, your hair needs to be about a quarter of an inch long for a safe and effective wax.

Two nights before your wax appointment, gently exfoliate the treatment area to remove any dead skin cells. If you’re waxing somewhere other than your face, we suggest wearing loose-fitting clothing that won’t cause friction in the treatment area. You can take an ibuprofen about an hour ahead of time to reduce discomfort.

During waxing

When you arrive for your waxing session, your esthetician will likely cleanse the treatment area before getting to work. They will apply the wax to your skin and then remove it in one swift motion. Depending on the type of wax used, they may use fabric strips to release it from your skin.

Many people describe the sensation as similar to removing a bandage. It can be uncomfortable at the moment but usually subsides quickly.

Waxing aftercare

Post wax, you’ll want to avoid excessive heat and friction until your skin heals. For the first day or two, wear loose clothing and skip the gym. Use a gentle cleanser and fragrance-free moisturizer.

If you experience irritation, you can apply pure aloe vera gel or a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Once your skin returns to normal, begin exfoliating every 2 to 3 days to prevent ingrown hairs.
